How did Nantucket Red get it’s name and preppy lineage?
In places like Nantucket, boatsmen wear bright colors so they can more easily be recognized in the water in case of capsizing or a slip overboard. To distinguish themselves from lifeguards many may have chosen red as “de rigueur” over orange. As most boatsmen would rather spend their money updating or buying a new boat, they are frugal when buying clothes and love their old favorites. Hence, what was once bright, sharply pressed and new faded to a soft not quite salmon, weathered red, what is now known as “Nantucket Red.”
