Rowing on the West Side and More

It’s in the thick of summer and the rowing is anything but easy with the scant possibility of a slight breeze or passing thunder storm for a bit of relief from summer heat.

The 103rd West Side Invitational will be held in Buffalo, New York for 89 Master, Open, Collegiate, High School and Junior entries from 6 clubs hosted by West Side Rowing Club located on Black Rock Channel next to Niagara River at the eastern end of Lake Erie. The race course lies at the foot of Front Park, south of Peace Bridge where Canada meets the United States. There are two 60 foot launching docks outside the Doc Schaab Boathouse, one 160 foot dock outside the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Fontana Boathouse in addition to a 60 foot motorboat dock. The West Side Rowing Club was established in 1912 and boasts a filled trophy room, board room and indoor rowing tank facility.

In California, River City Rebellion: A Small Boat Tournament will be held in the Port of West Sacramento for 54 Master, Open, Collegiate, High School, Junior and International entries from 10 clubs hosted by River City Rowing Club. The 1000m race is for singles, doubles or pairs.

In Massachusetts, the lucky 13th Annual Cromwell Cup will be held in Cambridge on the Charles River for Master, Open and Junior entries hosted by the Riverside Boat Club. Cromwell Cup, the largest summer regatta on the Charles is named for Seymour Cromwell, Riverside Boat Club alum who rowed in the 1936 Olympics. There will be over 600 rowers, 279 entries from 41 New England and Mid Atlantic clubs on the Charles for the 1000m race on the Powerhouse Stretch between Weeks Bridge and Magazine Beach.

 Occoquan Memorial Sprints will be held at Sandy Run Regional Park for Master and Open entries hosted by Occoquan Boat Club of Lorton, Virginia. The 1000m race course on Occoquan Reservoir provides stake starts on smooth water with grandstand viewing for the spectators. Proceeds from OMS regatta are used to benefit the Julia Shew Memorial Rowing Scholarship.

 In Illinois, the 36th Annual Chicago Sprints wrap up with finals later today hosted by Lincoln Park Boat Club for Master, Open, Collegiate, High School and Junior entries. The 1000m race course will take place on Lincoln Park Lagoon. For past and live results check HERE.

In Canada, ROWONTARIO Masters Championships will be held at the Welland International Flatwater Centre North Course in Welland, Ontario hosted by ROWONTARIO. There will be 296 entries from 26 clubs.  

Challenge West/BC Championships wrap up with finals today after three days of racing on  Elk Lake in Victoria, British Columbia hosted by Victoria City Rowing Club.

In British Rowing, Burton Sprint will be held Sunday 10th July 2016 in the East Midlands region.

Bedford Sprint Regatta will be held Sunday 10th July 2016 hosted by the Bedford Rowing Club on the River Great Ouse.

Kingston Borough Regatta will be held Sunday 10th July 2016 in the Thames region.
In World Rowing, Great Britain Rowing Team verses France for the J16 Match in Valenciennes, France.

European Rowing Junior Championships will wrap up Trakai, Lithuania for Junior and International entries hosted by Aurimas VILYS. The 2000m race course stretches across 7 lanes on Lake Galve.  For Live Blog check HERE.
